The frequency of huge wildfire seasons in Alaska has doubled in 30 years

LATE within the night, Walton Smith sat on his entrance porch and watched the tundra burn. For weeks, a wildfire had been licking in the direction of his residence in St Mary’s, a city of 600 folks in western Alaska. Because the solar sank, he may see flames soar between bushes. Smith, who's St Mary’s metropolis supervisor, says that because the cones within the spruce flared, “all the bushes round it will all of the sudden be engulfed in flames”.
