Virgin Media O2 gigabit broadband now available to 14.3 million UK homes

A further 1.6 million UK homes can now access Virgin Media O2's gigabit broadband service, bringing the total up to 14.3 million - more than 90 per cent of the provider's entire network.

It has recently enabled ultrafast connectivity to homes in Bath, Fife, Huddersfield, Ipswich, Lancaster, Lincoln, Salisbury, Slough, and many other towns and cities.

The latest switch on means that a vast majority of homes across Great Britain and Nothern Ireland can now sign up for the provider's Gig1 service, which offers internet speeds of up to 1,130Mbps.

Those still waiting for the opportunity to sign up for the fastest speeds will be able to do so by the end of 2021, when Virgin Media O2 plans for its entire network to be gigabit-ready.

"We’re making great strides ahead in upgrading the UK and are within touching distance of bringing the benefits of future-proof gigabit broadband to everyone on our network," said Virgin Media O2's CEO, Lutz Schüler.

"With our gigabit rollout progressing at an unmatched pace, we’re building the next-generation broadband network that’s ready for the technology of tomorrow."

A Gig1 fibre broadband package starts at £62 per month for broadband alone. It includes the Virgin Media Hub 4 router. The company also plans to upgrade all customers with a new, Wi-Fi 6-enabled model - the Hub 5 - from 2022.

You can find out more about Gig1 and check if your area is able to get it on the dedicated website here.
